West Coast GBC’s approach to custom homebuilding has made it one of San Diego’s most trusted names in luxury construction

There is a phrase that anchors everything West Coast General Building Contractors (West Coast GBC) does: ‘a beautiful life begins at home’. It is, above all else, a conviction – one that has shaped every decision Parker Piner has made since founding the firm in San Diego in 2002. It continues to define the work of the close-knit team he and his wife, Beth Piner, lead today.

West Coast GBC has built its reputation quietly and deliberately – step by step, brick by brick, relationship by relationship. The firm does not pursue volume. It pursues meaning. It is boutique by design: selective in the projects it takes on, deeply invested in the clients it partners with, and unwavering in its commitment to craft. As the firm approaches its 25th anniversary, Modern Home Builders sat down with Parker, Beth, and their son Cody Cluchey to understand what has made West Coast GBC not just enduring, but genuinely singular.

Roots in the craft

Parker Piner grew up in a building family in the American Midwest. Construction was not a career he chose so much as a world he was born into. “I started working alongside my dad when I was around 12 or 13 years old in northern Minnesota,” Parker recalls. “When the iron ore mining industry declined and the building work dried up, we relocated to northern California and started building houses there. I graduated high school and transitioned down to San Diego, where I went to work for a high-end builder. That experience shaped everything. It showed me what was possible at the top of this industry: the level of detail, the caliber of craft, the standard of client care. In 2002, I broke off on my own and founded West Coast GBC, with that standard in mind from day one.”

A partnership that transformed the firm

West Coast GBC began with a clear identity: personalized, quality-first, and deeply relationship-driven. That identity has never wavered. What has grown over the years is the team, the portfolio, and the operational sophistication that underpins the work. Much of that evolution traces directly to Beth Piner.

Beth came to West Coast GBC in 2008, bringing with her an extensive background in executive-level account management and enterprise solutions. She had spent years working with major firms in complex, high-value commercial environments, developing the operational acuity and systems thinking that would prove transformative for the growing firm.

“Parker and I met through work – West Coast GBC was a client of the company I worked for – and some years later I joined the company,” Beth explains. “What Parker had built was extraordinary in terms of client trust and craft. My role became about building the infrastructure to match that ambition: the processes, the systems, the operational frameworks that allow a boutique firm to deliver at the highest level, consistently, across complex and often years-long projects.”

As COO, Beth has stewarded the firm’s operational evolution through every stage of its growth – integrating new software platforms, refining project management systems, and ensuring that the back-end of the firm is as considered as the front. She is also a female leader in a traditionally male-dominated industry, something she approaches with both intention and pride.

“One thing Parker explained to me early on is that we’re interviewing our clients as much as they’re interviewing us,” Beth continues. “We’re entering what can easily become a ten-to-15-year partnership with the families we build for. That means alignment on values matters as much as alignment on vision. If someone is purely cost-driven, they may not be the right fit. But if they’re looking for someone who will be genuinely emotionally invested in their home and the life they want to build there – then we are almost certainly the right partner.”

The truest level of custom

West Coast GBC does not build to a style. It builds to a life. The firm’s portfolio spans new ground-up custom residences and architecturally significant historic renovations – each one a singular response to the specific client, site, and vision at hand.

“We don’t focus on a particular aesthetic,” Parker says. “We focus on who we’re building for; on what is unique to this client, this property, this moment in their life. Every project demands something special. That’s the work we want.”

The firm works alongside premier architecture firms and contracts exclusively with master artisans, craftspeople, and specialist subcontractors: partners chosen not only for their technical excellence, but for their character, their responsiveness, and their shared commitment to quality under pressure.

“We’re currently building a South-of-France-inspired villa,” Beth shares. “The owners purchased two side-by-side lots and wanted to create something that genuinely evoked the feeling of the south of France – not as an approximation, but as a fully realized architectural experience. That kind of project demands extraordinary attention at every level, from the structural decisions to the finest decorative details. It is that level of specificity that our team lives for.”

Honoring architecture’s legacy

Among the work that most distinguishes West Coast GBC is its increasingly specialized portfolio of historically significant renovation and restoration projects. These are not surface-level updates; they are complex, research-intensive undertakings. They demand an intimate understanding of period construction methods, original material sourcing, and the architectural intent of the original designer, combined with the modern engineering and building code expertise required to ensure longevity for generations to come.

“Historic mid-century architecture requires a team that can think many steps ahead,” Beth explains. “You’re working with intricate structural systems, original windows, period-specific details – elements that cannot simply be replaced with modern equivalents. Every decision must honor the integrity of the original while making the home livable, safe, and enduring for the family that will call it home next.

“We’re currently on our fourth historic project,” she continues. “It’s a beautiful mid-century modern home with terrazzo flooring, original fixtures, the full architectural vocabulary of the period. We’re recreating elements of that terrazzo, maintaining the fenestration and the proportions. These are the projects that require not just skilled hands, but seasoned architects and craftspeople who understand the responsibility of what they’re touching.”

Parker adds: “There’s a particular kind of passion required for this work. You have to genuinely love the architecture – its history, its logic, its character. We do. That’s no secret within the industry, and it’s why architects and institutions with architecturally significant properties consistently seek us out.”

The next generation

The arrival of Cody Cluchey into a full-time role at West Coast GBC two years ago marked a meaningful new chapter. His history with the firm, however, stretches back to adolescence.

“I started as a laborer at 14, waking up with Parker at 5am and working ten-to-12-hour days on job sites in Rancho Santa Fe,” Cody recalls. “That time in the field gave me a deep respect for the craft and for the people who do that work every day. It also helped me understand where I could contribute most. I gravitated toward the operational side of the firm, and during high school I took on our health, safety, and illness prevention planning. After college I joined full time, stepping into a project management role that drew on everything I’d absorbed over the years. I’ve worked alongside many of the same people since I was 14. That continuity means everything in this industry.”

For Parker and Beth, Cody’s presence is both a professional asset and a personal affirmation of everything the firm was built to be.

“We have always been a family company,” Parker reflects. “Some family you’re born with. Some you get to choose along the way. We are lucky to be a mix of both.”

Looking ahead

As West Coast GBC moves further into its third decade, the firm’s ambitions remain characteristically focused: not bigger, but better. The measure of success is not a larger project count, but a deeper quality of work and experience at every level.

“2026 is about finishing what we have in motion with the care and excellence our clients deserve,” Beth says. “We have three extraordinary projects underway, and we want those clients to step into their completed homes with a sense of excitement, gratitude, and joy about the life ahead of them.”

“The scale and structure of this firm is intentional,” Parker adds. “It allows us to remain genuinely close to every project and every client. We’re not going to compromise that. What we will do is continue investing in our people and in the craft.”

“With the team we have right now, we’re set up to do some of the best work of our careers,” Cody says. “That’s what drives me every day.”
