Detail and care

President of the company, Matthew Mabery outlines his journey into the industry: “My background was in framing. I started as a laborer and worked my way up to crew leader. Then I started my own company at the age of 25, as a subcontractor. After some success, I was able to buy a few residential lot and start building custom homes.”

He then goes on to share an update on the team’s achievements over the last 18 months: “We have finished seven homes and have started on working on eight more. We also have a very large home that is 26,000 square feet that is nearing completion that we have been working on for almost two years. Among the completed homes includes a very custom and rewarding home for a previous client, which included five structures, the main house, two guest houses, an oversized three bay garage, and a barn which includes an indoor pickle ball court.

“It also includes a unique spec home that we built on the golf course. We spent approximately a year in design and planning and another year to construct. It was a very challenging lot, which always makes a very interesting finished product with the exterior retaining walls and landscaping. Because it wasn’t up for sale through the process of the build, we were able to let the project evolve and make improvements along the way without limitations. We did several things to add a wow factor, in the hope that it would win over a potential suitor; one of which was an awning type overhead door in the lower level walk out patio. Another is an glass wall in the exterior shell of the swimming pool, which overlooks the 18th hole golf course green.”

The level of detail and care that goes into each Mabery build is clearly extraordinary, and Matthew goes on to explain how the company approaches customer service, which has to be priority: “We first approach each prospective client with a strong sense of compatibility. We want to make sure our visions and expectations align. Once in agreement, we feel like we do a great job of management. We have a project manager and superintendent for each client that assist in a close partnership through the construction process. It is always our desire to exceed our own and our client’s expectations.”

Journey to success

Having been active on Boot Ranch for over 17 years, the company has witnessed several market evolutions. Matthew elaborates on the early challenges, and how ultimately, success prevailed: “From 2009 to 2016, we only built four homes. The golf course development struggled, and ultimately failed. It was then purchased out of bankruptcy. That was the start of the boom for us and Boot Ranch. In 2016 we were hired to build the Texas Monthly model home for the new owners. Since 2017 to now we have completed 60 more homes out of the 130 that currently exist.

“Because of our successes and the draw to Boot Ranch, we have recently had several high-end architectural firms that want to partner with us to get their name in the hat for our future clients. To test the waters, we have agreed with a couple of them to help us with designs on a couple of lots that we currently own. We are excited to see how those ventures work out.”

Passion and drive

The completion of a client’s new home is just the beginning. One thing that distinguishes Mabery Contracting is its relationship with clients after their home is completed. Clients are seen as an integral part of the Mabery family. The team goes the extra mile to provide assistance for years to come.

The company is also committed to sustainability, not just through the materials it uses like responsibly sourced timbers but also through its stewardship of the land it builds on. Clients point to the great efforts Matthew and the team go to in order to protect the local native trees and natural grasses including positioning equipment in a way that protects the integrity of the landscape during construction.

Looking forward to the year ahead and beyond Matthew highlights the company’s ambitions: “2025 looks very solid and promising. We see wrapping up our monster house and then subsequently starting six more homes. One of those will be another spec home that we are very excited about.

“Five years seems a long way out, but we hope to maintain the current load of six custom homes per year. We hope to keep up the passion and drive that has gotten us here and make new long-lasting relationships with our future clients.”
