Shelter Custom Built Living is committed to bringing clients’ dream homes to life

As one of South Carolina’s most recognized and award-winning homebuilders, Shelter Custom Built Living has spent the last 12 years transforming client visions into finely crafted custom homes. Founded in 2013 by Ryan Butler and led alongside his wife, Jenny Butler, the firm reflects Ryan’s legacy as a second-generation builder who carried forward his family’s values of craftsmanship, innovation, precision, and a genuine passion for the details that define exceptional residential design.

Modern Home Builders last spoke with Jenny in 2024, a year marked by profound loss and transition following Ryan’s sudden passing. The impact was deeply felt a large, modern two-story house with a light-colored stucco or stone exterior by the family, the Shelter team, their clients, and the wider Charleston building community. Despite this incredibly difficult period, Jenny and the Shelter team demonstrated remarkable resilience, continuing to deliver outstanding homes while carrying forward the principles that shaped the company.

One year later, Jenny returns to reflect on Shelter’s progress and the meaningful ways in which Ryan’s influence continues to guide the business. Shelter experienced a short period of uncertainty in the months that followed his passing, yet the company emerged stronger and more focused. Today, Shelter has regained full momentum, maintaining its project volume and continuing to serve clients with the same dedication, transparency, and commitment to excellence that has defined the firm since its founding.

A pivotal component of Shelter’s success during this transition has been its leadership evolution. Jenny stepped fully into her leadership role with clarity and determination, and James Huffman, a longtime friend of Ryan and respected industry professional, joined the business as Director of Construction. Together, they have upheld Shelter’s standards and culture, strengthening relationships with clients, trade partners, and the design community.

Balanced portfolio

Jenny speaks with sincere admiration about James’ role in the company’s continued success, noting his strong reputation, deep construction knowledge, and natural ability to lead. His approach has honored Ryan’s vision while supporting the growth and operational strength needed for Shelter’s next chapter.

Shelter has also advanced a strategic shift first envisioned by Ryan: evolving from a solely custom home model to a balanced portfolio of custom residences and speculative home builds. In 2025, the firm completed six speculative homes alongside six custom builds and two remodels, meeting the strategic goal Ryan originally set. This blended approach has allowed Shelter to showcase its design capabilities, curate distinctive market-leading homes, and expand its presence in highly sought-after neighborhoods across the Charleston region.

Whether custom-designed or speculative, every residence is approached as a one-of-a-kind opportunity to create an elevated living experience that feels personal, curated, and timeless.

Among Shelter’s standout projects is the Dunham Street residence on Daniel Island. This custom home marries the charm of classic Charleston architecture with contemporary elegance, creating a sophisticated yet welcoming retreat. Designed in collaboration with Boyd Architects and Jenny Keenan Design, the home features expansive windows, elegant stone-gray brick, warm natural wood elements, and refined finishes that celebrate light, texture, and modern coastal luxury. Outdoor spaces overlook sweeping marsh views and a serene pool terrace, while the interiors are defined by thoughtful material selections, an artful mix of textures, and a sense of effortless sophistication.

As Shelter looks ahead to 2026, the business remains grounded in the values that Ryan instilled: integrity, craftsmanship, transparency, and an unwavering respect for the client experience. Jenny and the team are focused on strengthening the brand, continuing strategic growth in speculative development, and preserving the collaborative, client-centered approach that has become synonymous with the Shelter name.

“We will continue to honor Ryan’s legacy by remaining deeply committed to quality, process, and client relationships,” Jenny reflects. “Our goal is to deliver exceptional homes while staying true to the principles that have guided us since the beginning.”

Shelter Custom Built Living enters its next chapter with gratitude, momentum, and a clear vision for the future, dedicated to building homes that are thoughtful, enduring, and reflective of the remarkable legacy that continues to shape the company.
