Representing the best of homebuilding excellence, Schenkar Custom Homes redefines luxury on a global scale

From the highest mountain peaks to green valleys, beautiful shorefronts and bustling cities, Schenkar Luxury Homes (Schenkar) epitomizes the true meaning of luxury homebuilding. Recognized in Architectural Digest for excellent craftmanship and exceptional attention to detail, Schenkar is renowned as a leading custom homebuilder both in the US and beyond. Whilst many view homebuilding as a mere trade, for Schenkar, it’s a passion – one that translates into every sketch, frame and detail of every one of its projects. For nearly two decades, the business has defined luxury living through bespoke design and sustainable craftsmanship, delivering custom homes that are as elegant as they are enduring.

Modern Home Builders last sat down with Schenkar back in 2017, and a lot has changed since then. We’ve seen two US Presidents across three terms, a global a contemporary, multi-level house with a distinctive architectural design, featuring a combination of flat and shed roof lines pandemic, and a series of socio-economic events that have altered the course of the market forever. One thing has remained unchanged however, and that is Schenkar’s client-centric ethos and commitment to excellence – something that has resulted in consistent quality and success throughout its tenure. In August 2025, almost a decade since we last spoke, Modern Home Builders rejoins Alex Schenkar, President of Schenkar Luxury Homes, to discuss how the company has progressed in recent years and hone in on the secrets behind its continued success.

“The business has been thriving. We’re working in a very specialized market of luxury clients who value exceptional service and high-quality project execution. We’re very proud to have sustained nearly 20 years of successful projects with our clients; the market can be challenging, especially with the state of the economy and the tariffs, but we do have the foresight to see past that and plan ahead to continue to serve our clients,” he shares.

“We’re a full design-build construction company providing end-to-end service from architecture to engineering, permit facilitation and general contracting to high-end, single-family homes. We’ve now expanded our capacity for international construction, and our new focus is to build our luxury homes anywhere in the world to any specification that the client requests. Our first international project was in the town of Guatapé in Colombia, and we have an office nearby in Medellín.”

The project in Colombia marks an evolutionary shift in Schenkar’s journey, paving the way for further international expansion. Blending elegant architecture with modern innovation, the Guatapé project is a true standout, designed with sustainable building practices and committed to creating jobs that support the local community.  Nestled high in the Andes mountains and surrounded by emerald-hued waters, the home truly encapsulates the beauty of the area, with large, modern windows opening out to picturesque views that look fresh out of a Monet painting. The home is 3500 square feet built on a 1.5 acre lot, equipped with five bedrooms, four baths, and the latest in-home technology – an innovative and bespoke project that both personifies paradise and illustrates the very best of Schenkar’s capabilities.

“Our recently completed home in Guatapé was a very unique and dynamic project that involved a lot of structural engineering, civil engineering, and a significant amount of logistics,” Alex elaborates. “It’s a very modern design built out of 42 tons of steel, very specific to the environment that it’s in. We’ve supported the region’s economy by hiring local tradespeople and sourcing materials locally whenever possible. We’re very focused on sustainable construction in that way.”

When it comes to sourcing specialized materials and features, Schenkar will go the distance to make its clients’ dreams come true.

a luxurious, modern home in Guatapé, Colombia, designed by Schenkar Luxury Homes. “Each of our projects is specifically curated to the requests and expectations of the client; if a client requests specific materials from overseas, then we supply those materials from different countries. We source marble and tile from Italy, procure steel from Taiwan – it’s all customized. For the Guatapé project, we sourced materials from 14 countries,” Alex continues. “We want to ensure that we have exactly what the client is looking for. We never build the same house twice; every house has that specific Schenkar style, but it’s always unique to the client, the environment, and the aesthetic and historical architecture of the country. Topography is the most paramount factor in construction because it determines the degree of technicality required, such as if we’re building on a steep slope or a flat terrain. Schenkar focuses on very difficult topography, steep locations, and complicated logistics, and, depending on where the project is situated geographically, it can be challenging to procure and transport all the materials required. Because of this, we must employ many different engineering types and techniques to execute the project, from structural to geotechnical and civil engineering.”

With its 20th anniversary on the horizon, Schenkar’s journey has been nothing short of a true American success. Its portfolio showcases thoughtful, contemporary homebuilding inspired by global design and innovation, and the company still has so much more to offer. Alex concludes our conversation by taking a moment to reflect on what makes Schenkar so special and what its priorities are going forward.

“Our customer-centric attitude has been central to our longevity and success. Our product is unique – very dynamic – but what’s most important is the relationships you create during the process. There’s a high level of trust that needs to be established between the builder and the client to maintain a positive experience, so we always want to make sure that our customers have absolute confidence in the quality of the product and the way that it was delivered,” Alex reveals.

“We have multiple projects ongoing right now, both nationally and internationally, so our priority for the remainder of the year is to complete those projects within the schedule we proposed, maintaining the quality of the product and economy of building. We’re always trying to maintain that consistency; it’s great to have a strong brand, but it’s important to duplicate the same quality in every country and project, and that’s our goal. In the next three to five years, we would like to expand to new countries – maybe Dubai, Thailand, or Europe – based on client requests.”

As we embark upon the latter half of 2025, it’s clear that this year marks another successful chapter for Schenkar Luxury Homes. The sun shines brightly on its future, proving that with passion and inspiration, anything is possible in the art of homebuilding.
