Mountainwood Homes blends expert remodeling and custom builds with attentive service, strong teams, and lasting client relationships

While Mountainwood Homes specializes in remodeling and building new homes, the business considers itself a customer service company at its core. Committed to delivering its very best and creating an exceptional experience for every client, Mountainwood’s talented team boasts a combined experience of over 965 years.

Each project requires a team of experts, and Mountainwood brings all key contributors to the table to ensure the job is completed successfully. This team includes project developers, designers, project managers, trade partners, and behind-the-scenes support staff. With a significant number of decisions to be made before construction begins, clear and consistent communication is essential. This collaborative approach helps ensure that every project not only meets expectations but exceeds the client’s vision.

“We started the business back in 2008,” begins Robert Wood, Owner and President. “Just the two of us, myself and my wife Heather, and from there we’ve steadily grown into the team we’re really proud of to-day. Our work is largely focused on remodeling. We handle everything from kitchens and bathrooms to additions and full home remodels, really anything that fits within our design-build approach.

“When it comes to custom homes,” he continues, “we work with clients who already have their own land, helping them design and build something that truly fits their property, whether that’s an infill lot in the city or a larger site. But naturally, those projects are more limited, as land can be hard to come by in our market.

“Remodeling has always been at the core of what we do; it’s where we started, and we’ve built our entire process around guiding clients through that journey. It’s something we’re genuinely proud of. We actively focus on that side of the business, and we’re more than happy to be known as remodelers.”

Enjoyable experience

Mountainwood’s projects vary, and while some may assume from the company’s name that the signature aesthetic is rustic, that’s not the case. “Our goal with our design team is always to match what our clients need,” Robert explains. “We do a lot of contemporary work, which is very popular right now, and we also do plenty of Northwest-style projects. Probably the biggest part of what we do is helping clients blend their current desires with their existing home. That’s a huge design opportunity for us; making sure a home feels cohesive. For example, someone might have a Northwest-style house but want an ultra-modern addition. We help bring those styles together, so it feels intentional, balanced, and like the home was designed as a whole, not as two separate ideas.”

Over the years as the company has grown, its proven process has become increasingly important. “When someone calls us,” Robert elaborates, “they immediately meet with one of our project developers, who helps determine if the project is a good fit for both the client and us. They discuss the scope, budget, time-line, and overall vision.

“From there, a member of our design team joins the project, listening carefully to the client’s design criteria and helping develop layouts. Our integrated CAD team produces detailed drawings, including architectural elements, ensuring that both we and the client are aligned on a design that fits their budget and scope. Once the design is agreed upon, we provide pricing, move into a construction contract, and finalize all selections with the client before construction begins, removing as much stress as possible.

“During construction, our project managers coordinate all work with our trade partners, keeping every-

thing on track. After completion, our warranty team supports clients with any issues that arise. Throughout the process, our goal is to guide clients thoughtfully, helping them navigate the wealth of information available today, and ensuring the project outcome matches their vision while keeping the experience smooth and enjoyable.”

Building a strong team has always been a priority for Robert and Heather, and they’ve worked hard to maintain a family-like culture as the company has grown. That means investing time in training and ensuring each team member has what they need to succeed in their role.

“Our focus now is on continual development,” Robert shares, “and on making sure our approach and standards permeate every part of the company. We’ve been fortunate to retain talented team members from the community, and many have long tenures; most have been here at least five years, and many over ten. We truly have a strong, dedicated, and cohesive team.”

Community work

The company’s work is primarily focused in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Over the years, the team has learned to navigate the complexities of multiple jurisdictions and can guide clients through permitting and regulations efficiently. This ensures their homes, often their most valuable possession, are handled with care and integrity. Happy to stay local, Mountainwood focuses on doing excellent work and continually improving for the people who live in that area, rather than expanding geographically.

“The biggest thing we do is pay attention to our clients,” Robert adds. “A few years ago, we trained the entire team with a communications professional and continue to build on that learning. Just last week [at time of writing], we focused on a topic that was relevant to all of us, gathering team input to improve. Our goal is to build clients for life, ensuring they have a great experience, feel comfortable returning, and confidently refer us to friends.

“From the very beginning, Heather and I wanted to build something bigger than ourselves; something that would outlast us but also give back to the community. Even as a small team, we got involved early with Habitat for Humanity, contributing to builds and projects. Over the years, our community involvement has grown; we now aim for two to three large volunteer projects annually, including food packing events and Habitat builds. With a larger team, organizing these projects can be challenging, but we continue to seek meaningful opportunities. We also focus on addressing the local housing shortage, using our expertise to contribute through the home building foundation and other community initiatives.”

Vital contributions

Looking to the future, Robert shares his plans for the remainder of 2026 and his hopes for the coming years. “Our priority this year is simple,” he states. “We want to keep getting a little better every day. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved, including recent honors like the National Remodeler of the Year award, along with other local and national recognitions. But for us, it’s about incremental improvement; being better than we were last year, helping our clients more effectively, and gradually growing our presence in the local market.

“A key part of that success is our team. We value ownership; team members who are self-starters, responsible, and think like owners. To maintain a strong, cohesive team, we invest in shared experiences, from service projects to fun activities like bowling. Equally important are our trade partners. While we have a strong internal team, the work they help deliver is essential. We treat and celebrate them as part of the team,” he concludes. “Their contribution is vital to every project’s success and integral to our focus on building excellence and forging lasting relationships.”
