Modern Edge Homes’ harmonious collaborations bring fresh design and functionality to life
Specializing in quality custom homes with unparalleled style and functionality, Modern Edge Homes (Modern Edge) is a premier Oklahoma-based homebuilder. Particularly active in the custom-building landscape of Norman and the Oklahoma City metro areas, the company strives to create a specialized homebuilding experience unique to each customer.
Modern Edge emphasizes personal attention and commitment to communication with clients before, during, and after the building process, thereby ensuring that each customer is a part of a highly collaborative experience. Nathan White, Owner, recounts his early days in the homebuilding industry as well as the establishment of Modern Edge.
“My business partner, Austin, and I started as Contemporary Builders in 2015 and rebranded the company as Modern Edge Homes in 2017. Our team consists of Austin, a 3rd generation home builder, and myself, a coatings expert, designer, and former owner of a successful painting company. Austin and I met while he was working as a superintendent for his father, and I was painting their new construction. His father built quality custom homes, and his style was quite traditional. Austin and I saw this as an opportunity to influence his aesthetic, making it more current for the modern customer. Working together led Austin and I to create our own company focusing on remodels and building new homes.
“We became known for our unique carpentry, color, and style choices that competitors did not always offer, creating high-style homes of all sizes. This led us to enter some of our houses in the Parade of Homes locally and win awards for our interior design including Best Kitchen, Best of Show and Best Wow Factor. With these experiences, we became more confident and continued building houses with high-end design and innovative thinking. Following our tremendous success, we were asked to join an exciting new development that is unlike anything anyone has ever seen in Oklahoma,” he begins.
Building a community
Named Selah, this development is a thriving community neighborhood for which Modern Edge is building diverse types of homes. “Over half of the 650-acre neighborhood consists of walking trails, ponds, a lake, as well as equestrian centers. There are different districts in the neighborhood, which is very family and community oriented and designed around the New Urbanism concept. The area provides all essentials for living, playing, and working within the community, such as a pizza place with a spacious family gathering area offering activities like pickleball and ping pong, and areas for pets and families to play games. Additionally, there is a private restaurant called The Reserve where residents hold dinner parties every two months, as well as a full-service coffee shop. Our offices are located within the development, allowing us to meet with clients and customers on-site. Upon entering the neighborhood, visitors are greeted by beautiful masonry and architecture. The entry district showcases million-dollar homes along the road leading up the hill, lined with oak trees.
“Some live-work condos with commercial areas on the lower levels and residences above are currently being built, as well as a grocery store offering farm-to-table products from local farmers and regular groceries, a gymnasium, and a private school. Past the entry district, there is Sweetwater Village, an area featuring 2000+ square-foot homes with a distinct style reminiscent of coastal South Carolina. By the ponds down the hill, we have a charming little spot called Cottage Woods, which integrates with the woods and features 14 quaint cottages for sale, Airbnb rental, or even long-term rental. The neighborhood aims to attract a diverse socio-economic group, offering various housing options, from 1000 square-foot cottages and large houses to Airbnb rentals and duplexes, which we like to call two packs. “Selah is uniquely designed to attract a diverse population, catering to people with a variety of needs,” Nathan elaborates.
The extra mile
Modern Edge’s contribution to this innovative community is highly reliant on its network of subcontractors, who carry out the construction. Nathan explains how the company’s values shape the way in which it collaborates with subcontractors. “As I am on job sites every day, I am the one scheduling and overseeing our subcontractors’ work. With 30 years of experience as a subcontractor myself, I understand their needs and concerns, allowing me to foster special relationships based on mutual respect. Building positive relationships with subcontractors means that they are always ready to go the extra mile for us.
“We prioritize working with the best talent and maintain enduring relationships with them, even if it means waiting two weeks for our trusted electrician instead of hiring someone else. Our company culture emphasizes teamwork and mutual respect between subcontractors and builders, ensuring everyone feels valued and understood, which leads to smoother project execution. At Modern Edge, we understand that there should be a collaboration between the builder and the subcontractor, creating mutual understanding between both parties,” he enlightens.
By fostering strong partnerships with clients and subcontractors alike, Modern Edge seamlessly transforms visions into stunning, functional homes that redefine modern living in Norman and the Oklahoma City area.
