Jorge Bazan discusses FLUX modern’s innovative approach to architectural craftsmanship and tackling industry challenges
Jorge Bazan is the mastermind behind FLUX modern. In the busy environment of Atlanta, where tradition and innovation meet, the architecture and construction firm stands out for its commitment to modern design and personalized craftsmanship. FLUX modern, spearheaded by Jorge, has become a dependable name in the sector of contemporary homebuilding.
Founded on his passion for design, and desire for creative autonomy, FLUX has carved its niche in design. We had the opportunity to discuss Jorge’s journey with him, and how he established his trade: “Designing is my passion,” he begins, noting that his trajectory from Georgia Tech to UCLA for graduate studies laid the foundation for his career. FLUX modern’s inception in late 2009 marked the realization of Jorge’s vision. Collaborating with friends and family paved the way for FLUX early projects, including the Jurica Residence in Queretaro, Mexico and the Spalding Animal Hospital in Atlanta, showcasing Jorge’s versatility and commitment to bespoke design solutions.
“I have an amazing network of family and friends who connected me with the right people, and we started on a home in Mexico. That went well, and then my sister asked me to design and build her animal hospital. That was my first step into construction. From there, I’ve just been blessed to design and build for some incredible clients, and we’ve been able to build a wonderful reputation for ourselves here in Atlanta.”
Form meets function
With each project, FLUX modern’s reputation gained traction, and propelled Jorge’s dedication to quality craftsmanship and personalized service. With the help of Chelsey Dail, Project Architect, and Hector Macias, Construction Manager, the company’s portfolio subsequently expanded organically, encouraged by word-of-mouth referrals and Jorge’s natural ability to forge lasting client relationships. Today, FLUX’s dedication to detail ensures that the firm remains at the forefront of modern design, promising a living space where form meets function.
So, is this what separates his business from others in the sector? Well, according to Jorge, at the heart of our ethos lies a relentless pursuit of innovation and uniqueness. He shares: “We always wanted to create something new. I wanted to be innovative with every project that we did.” Unlike firms bound by rigid stylistic conventions, FLUX thrives on diversity, drawing inspiration from a myriad of sources. According to Jorge, the firm does not take the cookie-cutter approach, preferring instead to tailor each project to the client’s vision and the surrounding environment. “It isn’t always easy, but we try to tell our clients they need to trust us. The process of design isn’t always linear, we do not typically know what the project is going to look like until the end. However, our process allows for beautiful surprises along the way.”
Authenticity and purpose
As he’s mentioned, central to FLUX’s philosophy is a belief in collaboration. Jorge emphasizes the integral role of clients in the design process, emphasizing the importance of trust and partnership. “None of our projects would become what they are without their input and without their participation,” he affirms. By engaging clients as active collaborators, FLUX ensures that every project is instilled with a sense of authenticity and purpose.
Leaving its mark
Of course, the journey to establishing FLUX’s seamless processes has not been an easy one, and Jorge sheds light on some of the challenges he and his team have had to overcome, from weathering economic downturns to navigating the complexities of a competitive market. Yet, Jorge’s unwavering resolve and steadfast principles have propelled the firm forward. “You fight and you claw your way through it,” he reflects, emphasizing the importance of integrity, passion, and resilience in overcoming adversity. “There will be light at the end of the tunnel. We’ve had plenty of hard times, whether it was during the Great Recession, or Covid-19 where prices escalated, but we’ve always tried to do the right thing. We’ve always tried to save our clients as much money as possible, and we always put quality first, and I think that’s been our recipe for long-term success.”
We then move onto the topic of ESG. For FLUX modern, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a guiding principle woven into every facet of design and construction. Jorge explains the firm’s integrative approach, drawing inspiration from nature to create spaces that harmonize with their surroundings. From harnessing solar energy to optimizing natural ventilation, Flux prioritizes energy conservation and ecological stewardship in all its endeavors.
Quality first
Furthermore, innovative materials and construction techniques underpin FLUX’s commitment to sustainability. By minimizing the use of toxic chemicals, sourcing local materials, and embracing prefabrication, the firm mitigates its environmental impact while delivering projects to a high quality.
As FLUX looks to the future, Jorge Bazan envisions a landscape defined by continual innovation. With a keen eye on multifamily projects and affordable housing initiatives, the firm seeks to address pressing societal needs. By marrying visionary design with pragmatic solutions, Jorge endeavors to redefine the parameters of architectural and construction practice, leaving FLUX modern’s mark on the built environment.
In closing, he shares his profound love for his vocation, affirming his unwavering dedication to the craft. It is this passion, coupled with a pursuit of excellence, that propels FLUX towards new horizons, where creativity flourishes and craftsmanship is paramount. As the firm takes on its next chapter, one thing remains certain: the future of architecture and construction has never looked more promising.
