Experience from the ground up
Abbott’s understanding of construction began long before Vellum was founded. He grew up working in the trades alongside his father, a contractor in Palm Springs. After gaining years of hands-on field experience, Abbott attended community college and later studied architecture at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
Following graduation, he joined Charles Pankow Builders, where he worked on large-scale high-rise projects throughout major West Coast markets. The company self-performed complex concrete and precast construction on buildings reaching approximately 50 stories – an experience that exposed Abbott to sophisticated project management, demanding schedules, technical coordination, and an exceptionally high standard of execution.
That combination of practical field knowledge, architectural education, and large-project discipline continues to shape Vellum today. “We understand how a home is conceived, how it is engineered, how it is priced, and how it is actually assembled in the field,” Abbott explains. “That allows us to protect the design while also protecting the client’s investment.”
