How KC Custom Homes tastefully blends luxury with smart home automation

KC Custom Homes is a leader in the Texan home building landscape, with a legacy spanning over 25 years. The family-owned company’s commitment to excellence is reflected in every dream home it brings to life, making it the trusted choice for custom homes across the state. A year after our last conversation, we catch up with Vice President, Chris Castro, for an update on the company’s latest endeavors.

“For the past 12 months, we have focused on fine-tuning our systems and processes. As a result, our operations are now running smoother than ever, positioning us to take on more volume. Additionally, our management capabilities have been streamlined over the last year, allowing us to enter a scalable phase,” he opens. “While the past couple of years have been slower due to rising interest rates, we are starting to see a pickup in activity. At the moment, our primary clientele consists of cash buyers, as we operate in a luxury market with a significant number of high-net-worth individuals looking to build their forever homes. Therefore, we feel blessed to have a solid pipeline of work. In terms of design trends, we continue to see a preference for what I call the Hill Country contemporary style. Much of our work is located north of San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country, and we are noticing a lot more local buyers compared to out-of-state ones. This has been an interesting trend over the past 12-to-18 months, with clients becoming increasingly specific about what they want for their future forever homes,” he adds.

The George’s Ranch model home is one of KC Custom Homes’ latest completed projects. Chris tells us more about the property’s standout features. “Located in a community called George’s Ranch in Boerne, Texas, we built this home for the 2025 Greater San Antonio Builders Association’s Parade of Homes. This marked our first time participating in this prestigious event, so it was a big deal for us. We pulled out all the stops to deliver an exceptional product that is arguably the finest home we have ever built. Additionally, we got creative with both the architectural design and the finishes, and we take great pride in this project. We are allowed to showcase it as a model home until May 2026, and so far, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The Parade of Homes attracted over 9000 attendees in just ten days, and we won three awards at the event, including Best Floor Plan, Best Kitchen, and Best Home Automation, thanks to the many innovative smart home features integrated into that home,” he describes.

The house serves as testament to KC Custom Homes’ capabilities as a business, with all the architecture and construction managed in house. “The design was primarily developed by our architectural designer, while our interior designer handled all the selections. We gave her full creative freedom to shape the final product, allowing her to truly showcase her vision. Then, our skilled trades came and brought their best work to the project. We consistently collaborated with our dedicated team of trades, and everyone was committed to ensuring this home represented the pinnacle of what our company can achieve. Thus, I cannot take credit for all the stunning work accomplished; it was truly a team effort. We are incredibly fortunate to have built such a talented team capable of crafting this exceptional product,” Chris emphasizes.

Within the George’s Ranch model home, as well as in other projects completed over the past few years, KC Custom Homes has implemented numerous smart home technologies, as Chris highlights. “There is a noticeable trend toward increasing home automation of all kinds, with some customers spending as much as $100,000 on these features. We can incorporate a wide range of technologies into the homes we build. One example is smart switches, which are installed in every room of some of the homes we build. The lights are operated by a single control, which offers up to five different functions in one compact unit. Each corner of the switch performs a different task, allowing homeowners to manage various devices using just one small control instead of large banks of light switches.

“Additionally, we have incorporated some advanced programmable RGB lighting that lets users change the colors to create different moods and scenes in all the rooms inside of the home. This system can even sync with music for an enhanced experience. To facilitate this function, we use an app which features a very user-friendly interface that provides complete control over the entire home. We also include master switches inside the property that offer even more convenience. For instance, four taps on one switch can turn off all the lights in the house, making it easy for homeowners living in large houses to manage their lighting without having to manually turn off each light at the end of the day,” he concludes.

Looking back over the past year, KC Custom Homes can celebrate many achievements. One notable highlight was from the Texas Association of Builders Star Awards, where it swept the board – not only being presented the esteemed Grand Award – Custom Builder, but also winning eight other prestigious awards. As it heads into 2026, the business’ innovative design, uncompromising quality, and relentless focus on customer satisfaction look set to uphold its position as the premier choice for bespoke dream homes in the Texas luxury real estate market.
