How J. Martin Builders constructs beautiful builds in the most challenging environments

The mountains of Montana and the beaches of Hawaii may sound unlikely partners, but they unite as locations where stunning properties built by J. Martin Builders can be found. Whether a client is looking to lounge by the pool surrounded by palm trees, or be at one with nature in their forest yard, President Jason Gerbozy and his team can deliver their dreams, on time, and on budget and at a level of finish that is second to none.

This is thanks to the 22 years of experience accrued by J. Martin Builders over the course of its history – it has been constructing custom homes since 2003. Jason joins Modern Home Builders to share more of the story. He begins: “We began over 20 years ago, and at that time, we primarily concentrated on finish carpentry work. Over the years, we evolved into remodels, and after a subsequent few years of growth, we began building new homes from scratch. Then, in 2019, we successfully expanded this offering into the Hawaii market. We now focus on custom homes and remodels in Northwest Montana and Hawaii.”

Jason continues with details on the business’ areas of expertise. “We work with a wide variety of sizes, styles, and budgets. I genuinely enjoy having a mix of different types of projects, and I believe that this diversity provides our clients with unique and valuable experiences. For instance, we’re able to share the efficiencies required on smaller projects with our larger ones, and we bring a level of detail from our larger projects which enhance our smaller ones.”

Recognition and accolades

Jason then shares some exciting news about a significant project that the company is currently completing, and which demonstrates the company’s ability to overcome difficult terrain: “We’re finishing a large home in The Homestead, a luxury community located in Whitefish, Montana. The site presented us significant challenges, including the routing of utilities and constructing a driveway that stretches a third of a mile through rock outcroppings to situate the home on a rock ledge that overlooks the stunning Whitefish Mountain Range. Keeping the site accessible throughout the winter has proven challenging, with someone from our dedicated team plowing or sanding the driveway every day to ensure that our crews have safe access to the job site. We’ve incorporated a variety of materials into the home; there’s a significant amount of stone, timbers, glass, and steel elements. As the site was carved out of the rock ledge, we’ve actively looked for opportunities to incorporate the natural rock outcroppings into the landscaping design.”

From Jason’s description of the Whitefish project, it is clear that design and aesthetics are as important as build quality and materials. Given this level of attention, it is no surprise to learn that J. Martin Builders’ distinctive homes have continually received industry-wide recognition and accolades. For example, an exclusive property in Hawaii recently won a prestigious BIA Building Industry Design & Construction Award. Jason elaborates: “Laniakea ’Ohana Retreat is a beautiful home we completed in 2021 on the North Shore of Oahu. This was not only a fantastic project but also a fun collaboration between the owners, the architect, and our talented firm. The home is situated right on the beach and features large pocketing doors that create expansive and connected indoor and outdoor living spaces. The great room boasts ten-foot by 32-foot doors on both sides, allowing the refreshing trade winds to flow right through from the ocean to the serene courtyard.”

Trade partnerships

Another essential factor to consider when building in such beautiful and remote locations is the necessity of ecological guardianship and responsibility. Jason explains the company’s approach to working harmoniously with the environment: “We’re highly sensitive to our surroundings and strive to minimize our overall footprint on the build site. The extra effort required during construction ultimately saves significant rehabilitation work at the end of the project. We must be mindful of the forests in Montana as well as the waterways in Hawaii. Additionally, wildfire mitigation has become critically important, ensuring that our homes are built in ways that minimize their susceptibility to embers and other fire risks.”

It is these proactive approaches to unique challenges that set J. Martin Builders apart from its competition in the industry. Jason highlights some of the innovative tools, techniques, and processes that the company employs to stay ahead of the curve: “We utilize various technologies in our builds including electronic 3D structural models and survey-grade layout equipment to accurately transfer plan data into the field. We pride ourselves on being excellent communicators and providing transparency to our clients throughout the entire build process. Many of our clients are out of the area during construction, so we make it a priority to ensure they stay up-to-date on our progress and the project financials at every stage of the build.”

Another of the key factors contributing to the company’s ongoing success is its strong relationship with suppliers and contractors as well as clients. “We really value our trade partnerships,” confirms Jason. “We’ve connected with some exceptional teams that are masters of their craft and take as much pride as we do in producing the highest quality work possible.”

Exciting possibilities

While the coming year may have some challenges in the market that need to be faced, Jason and his team can rely on their strong foundation and close partnerships to help them overcome any difficulties that may arise. Jason concludes with the company’s priorities, remaining confident that J. Martin Builders will continue its growth journey: “There is some uncertainty expressed by many in the market, but our goal is to remain true to our values and deliver the very best products we can for our clients. We want to keep creating homes that will be cherished and enjoyed by generations to come. We’re always looking for new challenges. It’s fun to reflect on where we’ve come from and to think about all the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.”

With its roots in Montana’s rugged landscapes and now present in Hawaii’s tropical paradise, J. Martin Builders can handle diverse terrains when delivering the house of its clients’ dreams. But it crafts more than just houses – it builds foundations for families’ futures, blending craftsmanship, design, and a commitment to creating lasting, personalized living spaces that reflect the unique spirit of each environment.
