How design-build firm iBuildPdx brings luxury to every home with award-winning architecture, adaptability and collaboration
When trained architect Eduard ‘Ed’ Valik immigrated from Czechoslovakia to North America in the early 1990s, he took with him his deeply Viennese-inspired design perspective along with a passion for sketching and buildings. After settling in Portland, Oregon, he spent decades refining his craft and, in 2013, formed the luxury design-build firm, iBuildPdx Company LLC (iBuildPdx), known today for its commitment to individuality, craftsmanship and architecturally driven homes. The company has grown into one of Portland’s most respected custom homebuilders and is defined by precision, creativity, and a deeply personal approach to every project.

Specializing in high-end custom homes, large-scale remodels and technically complex residential construction, the firm also undertakes smaller commercial projects and is widely recognized for modern, minimalistic architecture. However, with a portfolio spanning a range of styles, every build is unified by thoughtful design, architectural integrity and exceptional execution. “Each home is entirely bespoke, designed to reflect the client’s lifestyle and the character of the site,” Ed explains. “Signature elements often include expansive glass, steel and concrete construction, open floor plans, and seamless indoor-outdoor living. Whether urban infill or expansive estate properties, our focus remains on delivering homes that are both visually striking and highly functional.”
With an Associate Degree in Architecture and Structural Design and over 30 years of experience, Ed and his talented team excel at projects with terrain challenges, such as infill lots and steep hillsides, and are well-versed at adhering meticulously to project timelines and budgets. This combination of passion and expertise has built iBuildPdx a reputation around modern, minimalistic architecture over 12 years, which Ed notes demands a level of precision that far exceeds traditional construction. “There is no margin for error with clean lines, exposed materials and minimal ornamentation,” he notes. “Every joint, edge and transition must be executed flawlessly. I often say, ‘it takes a lot of work to make it look simple.’ This complexity requires highly skilled tradespeople who understand the nuances of modern design and can consistently deliver at a high level.”
From concept to completion
The firm’s dedication to perfection extends beyond aesthetics to structural integrity, where modern materials like steel and concrete demand specialized knowledge and meticulous attention during fabrication and installation. Subsequently, iBuildPdx has built long-standing relationships with trusted subcontractors and suppliers and has collaborated with many of them for over a decade. “These partnerships are rooted in clear communication, mutual respect and a shared commitment to quality,” he adds.
Not only is iBuildPdx dedicated to working relationships with tradespeople, but its commitment to clients also means collaborating with them closely, from concept to completion – focusing on luxury and bringing their dreams to life. As an award-winner in his field, Ed understands the importance of great design, proper execution and the extremely important relationship between owner, architect and the general contractor. The firm’s goal is to develop customized spaces that meet clients’ needs and preferences, while striving to create new experiences and reflect client originality. “We believe the relationship between our team and clients is essential to a successful project. With that in mind, our work goes beyond the everyday experience, building something extraordinary,” the company states on its website. This philosophy manifests in regular client consultations, transparent communication about design choices and construction progress, and a willingness to adapt solutions as projects evolve while maintaining the integrity of the original vision.
Working on large estate projects, including the Bald Mountain Residence, Riverview Residence, and Hillside House, iBuildPdx demonstrates how seamlessly it can pivot between building modern architecture on rural or semi-rural sites, and urban construction – expertly navigating a distinct set of challenges along the way. “Many of our projects often require extensive upfront work, including site development, infrastructure and access solutions before construction can begin,” reveals Ed. “Steep terrain, limited accessibility, and environmental considerations add complexity to both design and execution. Logistics, such as transporting materials and coordinating trades, also become more demanding. However, these challenges are balanced by the opportunity to create highly distinctive homes that are deeply connected to their surroundings, maximizing views, privacy, and the natural landscape in a way that urban sites typically cannot.”

Designed to capture stunning views of the Willamette Valley, Hillside House is a ground-up custom home that blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings. The design team prioritized the diffused natural light coming from the North throughout the day, with special attention to the early East light that filters into the kitchen to suit the clients’ morning rituals. The plan, layout, and elevations organically emerged once these priorities had been established, and the interior color palette and material selections were inspired by the native surroundings of rich red earth and natural grasses.
Aligned approach
Continuously expanding its portfolio of completed masterpieces, iBuildPdx currently has several exciting, design-forward projects underway. Among them are two ultra-modern homes that reflect the firm’s evolving approach to luxury living. One notable project is a waterfront residence situated along the river, complete with a private dock – an exceptional integration of architecture and lifestyle. “These homes emphasize clean, contemporary design while pushing the boundaries of material use, spatial flow and connection to the environment,” highlights Ed. Additional projects are in various stages of development, underscoring continued demand for highly customized, modern residences in the Pacific Northwest and driving further growth for iBuildPdx.
A key differentiator for iBuildPdx is its in-house architectural expertise, combined with a collaborative approach that also partners closely with outside architects and design professionals. This flexibility allows the firm to deliver a fully integrated design-build process while supporting a wide range of architectural visions and project needs. Unlike traditional models, where design and construction operate separately, iBuildPdx aligns both disciplines from the outset to preserve the original design intent while improving efficiency, cost accuracy, and timeline management. “This approach allows for more proactive problem-solving and a higher level of collaboration with clients and project partners,” Ed concludes. “Decisions can be made quickly with a clear understanding of both design and construction implications, resulting in a more seamless process and a final product that reflects a cohesive vision from concept to completion.”
