How Cornerstone Development is creating communities that foster convenient living

A home is so much more than a building; it’s where we relax, unwind, socialize, and play out our lives. Promising to provide comfortable, effortless, and convenient living, Cornerstone Development of S.E. WI. (Cornerstone) is Southeast Wisconsin’s leading developer and builder of ranch-style condominium communities and single-family homes. From creative floorplans to great amenities, Cornerstone’s communities offer the perfect balance of comfort and convenience and are designed to promote a meaningful and relaxing lifestyle.

“Ninety-nine percent of our buyers are not young families, but rather empty nesters; they’re looking to downsize, simplify their lifestyle, and have the reassurance of buying a new property. We specialize in building ranch-style, single-level homes within neighborhood settings with shared amenities like a clubhouse, pool, pickleball courts, bocce courts and walking paths. Many of these communities also include exterior services such as lawn cutting, gardening and snow removal, meaning homeowners don’t need to worry about this maintenance and can spend their free time enjoying their life with family and friends.”

More than a home

For Cornerstone, creating a welcoming community space is equally important as building exceptional homes. “While it’s important that we create beautiful homes, these communities offer more than a home, instead providing a lifestyle proposition that is attractive to our main audience,” John confirms. “We consider the homeowners’ lifestyle throughout the entire process, starting with design. Our homes typically include large statement kitchens with feature-piece islands, as this is great not only for meal preparation but also for entertaining guests. We like to include lots of windows to emphasize natural light, and we use luxury materials like granite, quartz, and hardwood flooring.

“We’re definitely seeing a trend towards indoor-outdoor living, and people are embracing the idea of open spaces. For many of our homes and condominiums, we’ve designed a flexible guest suite that can be a completely private space when guests are visiting, but the pocket door can also be opened to provide an extra bathroom when entertaining. Other trends include stone exteriors, as well as large, open-plan kitchens that are both beautiful and functional.”

To secure the company’s continued success, John has appointed a new president to work alongside him. “Joe Orendorf has worked in the business his entire life and he’s an incredibly well-known and respected individual around the city,” John shares. “Joe’s positive attitude, extensive experience, and depth of knowledge make him an ideal candidate for the role of President, and I have shifted to the role of Chairman.”

Turning to projects, John shares details about a recently completed community, The Glen at Muskego Lakes, in Muskego, Wisconsin. “This is a beautifula modern, open-plan kitchen and dining area neighborhood near the entrance to a golf club, with an incredible clubhouse, water fountains, pool, and pickleball court,” John explains. “The location is ideal; the topography is beautiful, with water features, tree canopies, and wildflowers everywhere, but the community is also part of a vibrant suburb with plenty of local events and entertainment options.

“We’ve built 80 condominium homes, all focused on creating airy and bright spaces with lots of windows, high ceilings, spacious rooms, and features that maximize the natural surroundings. The properties are designed as two and three-bedroom, ranch-style homes with open concepts, a sunroom or den, and large outdoor spaces, and our turnkey packages comprise the home, site, driveway, irrigation, and landscaping.

“I’m personally really pleased with this community, and it’s one that I feel a huge sense of pride for when I drive past,” he reflects. “The core purpose of this company is to positively impact the lives of those around us, and Muskego Lakes certainly achieved this.”

Cornerstone is clearly committed to creating thoughtful neighborhoods that promote a change of lifestyle. “We have two brand-new communities on the go, one of which is situated within a beautiful golf course, and we’ve added garage doors specifically for golf carts,” John reveals. “Located in North Prairie, this beautiful community is more in the quiet countryside than our other neighborhoods, but it’s still in a convenient location to reach retail and entertainment amenities. We’re seeing a lot of early interest in this community, and we’re also in the process of gaining approval for a new neighborhood in Pewaukee.”

With several exciting communities underway, Cornerstone is continuing to create thoughtful spaces that promote a relaxed and convenient lifestyle. Through meticulous planning and homeowner-centric designs, the business is well positioned for another record-breaking year as we head into 2026.

“We’re looking to finish 2025 in a very strong position,” John concludes. “We had a record August this year and the sales are continuing to flood in, with exciting plans already underway for 2026. We’ve completed around 75 homes this year, but we’ll look to increase that figure to around 85-to-90 homes, and we’ll also expand our team to execute this growth.”
