How collaboration, craftsmanship and family values have shaped G Family Construction
Founded in 2001 by brothers David and Jon Grabham, G Family Construction has grown from a small business building decks and fences into one of Marin County’s leading design-build firms. Building on a family legacy of craftsmanship established by their father, James Grabham, the company now brings together more than 100 professionals across in-house design, construction, landscaping and electrical divisions. This fully integrated approach enables every stage of a project, from initial concept and drafting through to construction and finishing, to be managed collaboratively under one roof.

“My brother and I started the company 25 years ago,” begins Jon Grabham, President. “As our reputation grew, so did the business. Today, our specialist crews focus on one area of the build, which means they work efficiently and deliver consistently high-quality results. Because our designers and construction teams collaborate from the very beginning, we’re able to create a smoother process for clients, designing projects that are not only beautiful but practical, cost-effective and built to the highest standard.”
Specializing in high-end residential remodels and new builds, G Family has earned a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, thoughtful design and a client-focused approach.
“We’re a true design-build company, which is still relatively uncommon at our scale,” Jon continues. “We have our own in-house designers and draftsmen. That integrated, collaborative approach makes projects more seamless and efficient for our clients. We specialize in contemporary, modern homes and pride ourselves on staying ahead of design and construction trends. We’re constantly refining our processes and reviewing every project to identify ways to improve, so we’re always evolving and delivering better results with each build.”
Project versatilty
One of the biggest advantages of G Family’s integrated design-build model is the consistency it creates, both for clients and the team. While many contractors experience peaks and troughs in workload, G Family’s in-house design department is planning projects one-to-two years in advance. That gives clear visibility of what’s coming through the pipeline, allowing the team to schedule work and maintain a steady workflow throughout the year.
“In turn,” Jon adds, “we’re able to retain experienced, long-term employees rather than constantly hiring and losing staff. For our clients, that means a more organized process, stronger collaboration between design and construction, and a team that has the time and continuity to deliver the highest quality results.”
Among G Family’s recent projects are two striking contemporary homes that showcase the company’s versatility. One is a 5000-square-foot custom residence in Tiburon, delivered in collaboration with an external architect, while the other is a recently completed modern home in San Rafael that was designed and built entirely in-house. Together, the projects highlight the firm’s ability to work seamlessly with architectural partners or provide a fully integrated design-build service from concept to completion.
“People often assume the biggest challenge is the construction,” Jon shares, “but it’s really managing expectations. A good contractor is someone who sets realistic timelines, communicates clearly and helps clients understand what’s involved from the outset. Construction is a partnership, and the best projects happen when everyone stays engaged and decisions are made on time. By being proactive and addressing potential issues before they arise, we can keep projects on track and create a much better experience for our clients.”
Indeed, Marin County is a high-end market, and that naturally comes with very high client expectations. Success starts with understanding those expectations and having open conversations about what’s achievable, balancing quality, budget, and timeline from the outset.

“We work closely with clients to explain the different levels of craftsmanship and finish available, so they understand that the highest-end results require additional time and investment,” Jon explains. “Clear communication and transparency are essential to ensuring expectations align with what’s possible and delivering an outcome that everyone is proud of.”
Continuous improvement
Family has always been at the heart of G Family. Jon and David grew up working alongside their father, who was a general contractor, and the teamwork and values learned then still shape the way they run the business today.
“We don’t just see our employees as staff; we see them as part of the family, and we believe that means investing in them for the long term,” Jon emphasizes. “We provide comprehensive benefits, including health insurance and retirement plans, because we want our team to build lasting careers with us. We also make time to celebrate together, from company events like our annual ‘G Family Summer Camp’ to recognizing employee milestones and long service. That culture of support has created remarkable loyalty, with most of our team having been with the company for more than five years, and many staying for ten, 15 or even 20 years. In an industry known for high turnover, we’re incredibly proud of the team we’ve built and the support we show one another.”
Over the next few years, G Family’s focus isn’t simply on becoming bigger; it’s on becoming better. “We’ve invested a lot of time and resources into developing our systems, improving workflows and creating a more efficient construction process from the first client conversation through to project completion,” Jon elaborates.
“For us, growth means continuing to refine how we operate, staying organized, anticipating client needs and finding smarter ways to deliver exceptional results. The construction industry can often be reactive, but we want to stay ahead by planning proactively, using the information we’ve gathered and creating a smoother, more predictable experience for both our clients and our team,” he concludes. “Ultimately, our goal is to continue raising the standard for how design-build projects are managed.”
