From Louisiana to New Orleans, the spotlight shines on Scheffy for true homebuilding greatness
Bringing luxury and excellence together, Scheffy is building custom homes that encapsulate the true meaning of the American Dream. More than your average general contractor, building a home with Scheffy is a real partnership – one that holds clients close to its heart throughout the entire process. The company was founded by President and Chief Executive Officer, Robert Scheffy, in 2014, and, over a decade later, Scheffy has flourished and prospered. Alongside his wife Hilary, Robert is joined by a talented team of construction craftsmen, with Stewart Deville serving as Chief Operating Officer, Tony Cockerhan as Senior Project Manager, Shannon Manchester as the Master Carpenter, and Tommy Guedry as Senior Superintendent.
Now, having just surpassed its ten-year anniversary last year, Scheffy is bigger and better than ever before, granting more and more homeowners’ dreams with every passing year. As the company continues to expand its horizons, Modern Home Builders joins Robert Scheffy to learn more about what makes the business so special, as well as what lies ahead in its next chapter. Robert starts by sharing insight into his own construction background and the evolution of Scheffy.
“I graduated from LSU in construction in 2007. After that, I worked for a commercial contractor for some years before starting my own company,” Robert begins. “I founded Scheffy in August of 2014, three months after my wife, Hilary, and I got married. Hilary is a big part of what I do; she’s very supportive. She has her real estate license. She handles a lot of my phone calls and turns prospective clients into leads, and I couldn’t do it without her.
“We don’t advertise; everything that comes through the doors is a referral from an architect, designer or previous clients,” he continues. “We do high-end custom homes and extensive renovations, though the custom homes have become our niche. Our projects typically take around two to three years and we offer a concierge-type service where our project managers are readily available to our clients. We do a lot of traditional, Acadian-style projects with AI Jones Architects, but at the same time, we work with a lot of modern designers too. Our typical style is transitional, combining old elements like antique wooden floors, pine beams and traditional Louisiana front porches with modern elements, such as plastic wall finishings and marble countertops.”
Special project
Touching all corners of homebuilding beauty, Scheffy’s portfolio boasts a series of stylish homes that blend historical charm with innovative modernization. From high ceilings to wooden beams, French shutters to elegant patios, Scheffy’s projects celebrate all the enchanting qualities of traditional Louisiana architecture with a contemporary feel, making its longstanding partnership with AI Jones Architects all the more fitting. One of Scheffy’s more recent projects in collaboration with AI Jones Architects, however, was especially significant.
“We just finished a project in January of this year that was particularly special. It was a two-year project in collaboration with AI Jones Architects, and was Mr AI Jones’ last project before he sadly passed away. AI Jones is a Louisiana legend when it comes to being an architect and it was a very great, humbling experience to be able to work alongside him, and we couldn’t have asked for a better client on that project,” Robert shares.
“Buying a home is usually the biggest investment in people’s lives, so it gets emotional – there’s ups and downs, arguments and disagreements – but at the end of the day, you’re building something that these people are going to live in for a lifetime, and that’s really special.”
Continuous improvement
Indeed, 2025 has been another great year for Scheffy and building upon its previous legacy, it is well-positioned for further success. From a global pandemic to an onslaught of macroeconomic challenges, the past decade has been difficult to say the least, but Scheffy’s resilience and passion continues to triumph, supporting its position as a first-choice homebuilding partner. For the latter half of this year, Scheffy remains focused on driving continuous improvement, a quality that’ll be instrumental in its newest market expansion.
“This year, we’ve really been focusing on changing and perfecting our internal systems and procedures. My father’s been very instrumental in that from both a business and legal standpoint, guiding us on the best way to protect our company, our subcontractors and out vendors,” Robert says. “Our focus for the latter half of this year will be on implementing those systems, as well as finishing up existing projects and starting new ones. We currently have around $17 million under contract, up from around $9 million last December, and a lot of that comes from our relationships with architects and previous clients.
Supportive team
“We’re expanding into New Orleans as we speak. We’ve got two big projects scheduled, of which we’ve teamed up with a leader in the New Orleans construction industry,” Robert reveals. “They’ve been a great asset in helping me do these projects from a management standpoint, which allows me to be in Baton Rouge; if I can’t be in New Orleans, I know that they’re there to fill that support role. New Orleans is a unique city; it’s totally different than anywhere else and construction there is much the same. We’re working on homes that were built in 1850, which are beautiful but tricky.
“We’ve also dabbled in some small infill developments, and we’d like to do more of those projects in the city further down the road. It’s hard to find land in Baton Rouge but being able to develop a whole neighborhood and sell it is something that I’ve always wanted to do; it’d be a great way to mass produce the product we provide.”
With the sun shining brightly on Scheffy’s future, Robert concludes our conversation by homing in on the company’s most important asset of all.
“I want to thank my wife and my team, as well as Tommy Guedry, my framer. He’s been full time with me for seven years now. He’s a true craftsman and has taught me way more than I could’ve learned in college; when it comes to construction, he’s been a huge asset in allowing us to build the caliber of homes that we do,” he finishes. “It’s been 11 years, and the business has grown faster than I could’ve ever imagined. I couldn’t have done it without the support of the people behind me. They’re the ones that make me look good.”
