Modern Home Builders sits down for an interviw with Adam Merrill, President of John Merrill Homes, to learn more about the company’s background and to uncover the qualities that keep this family legacy one brick above the rest. Adam begins our conversation by sharing insight into his own career background and how his passion for architecture led him into the world of custom homebuilding.
Building a legacy
“When I was in high school, I thought I wanted to be an architect. I then worked for an architect and quickly realized that it wasn’t what I wanted to do, but I still had a lot of interest in architecture,” he reveals. “From that, I decided to study building construction at the University of Florida. I got a number of contracting jobs out of college, but nothing seemed to fit me correctly, until I went and worked with a luxury builder. I worked with them for 12 years and progressed to be the President of one of their local franchises. By the time I left that job, I’d learned a lot, and that’s how I came to found John Merrill Homes.
“Today, John Merrill Homes is a custom homebuilder working predominantly in the Greater Jacksonville market. We offer the full turnkey service from planning to designing and construction, and my wife, Dana, is an interior designer who works closely with all our clients through the selections process. We’re proud that our business will be turning ten years old in March 2026.”
Though Adam founded John Merrill Homes in 2016, his family name is no stranger to Florida’s real estate sector. The company’s name actually pays homage to Adam’s grandfather, John Merrill, who established his real estate business, John Merrill Realtor, in 1956 – 60 years before John Merrill Homes was incorporated. Located in Gainesville, Florida, John built a successful reputation centered around honest business and great service, firmly instilling the values of professionalism, honesty, and integrity into the family. Inspired by his grandfather, Adam champions these same values into John Merrill Homes, which drive its passion for customer service and continuous strive for excellence.
“We primarily build for families, so Dana and I are heavily involved in our projects and work very closely with our clients. We build around six-to-seven houses a year at most, which means that we can have good, close relationships with our customers, and we have a tried-and-true process that allows to truly understand what our customers’ requirements are and how we can meet their budget,” Adam explains.
Design-build excellence

Whether its clients are seeking homes with coastal influences, southern living, country modern, or Mediterranean, no challenge is too great, and, because of the company’s position in the Greater Jacksonville market, it can leverage the expertise and experience of trusted partners to help craft something truly spectacular. A recent project – an $11 million Tennessee farmhouse – provides a great example of this approach.
“We specialize in what I call true design build. We do in-house architecture for the majority of the homes that we build, but we will bring in trusted designers and architects if the client needs someone with a little more specialist experience in a certain style,” Adam elaborates.
“For this project, the customer came to us with an architect they’d already hired and were working with for over a year. The customer wasn’t happy; they weren’t really getting the service that they wanted, and the project was running behind schedule. They were referred to us, so we brought in a trusted team to make sure that the project was staffed appropriately, because it was a big project. We brought in all the engineers, a landscape architect, and we met with our design partners to create schedules and manage the entire process in order to meet our customers’ timeframes. We were able to turn around the design of this 14,000 square foot home, with four structures across 45 acres, within six months.”

With its tenth anniversary just around the corner, the company looks forward to a celebratory year and is excited to commemorate this milestone with a new anniversary logo and merchandise.
