For two decades, Modern Age Home Builders has been raising the bar for what a Long Island home should look like
One of Long Island’s largest and most established home builders, Modern Age Home Builders (Modern Age) is renowned for developing sophisticated and energy efficient communities and custom homes. With a team that collectively brings over a century of construction experience to the table, the company has consistently stayed ahead of changing building codes and buyer expectations, integrating cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices long before they became the norm. Peter Bukowski, Owner, tells us more about the factors that have contributed to Modern Age’s stellar reputation.

“I started out as a framing contractor 33 years ago on Long Island, building up quite a large business with multiple crews at our peak. Over the years, we transitioned into building homes ourselves, initially through a few joint ventures with some of our former partners, and we became a builder in our own right around 15 years ago. That is where our story really began,” he opens.
Today, the company operates across what amounts to the full spectrum of the Long Island market. On the more accessible end, the company builds for first-time buyers, with entry-level homes on Long Island currently starting at around $700,000 and ranging up to $1 million. From there, Modern Age moves into higher-end territory, with a strong presence on the North Fork and also operates across the South Fork and the Hamptons. Spot builds across Long Island fill out the rest of the portfolio, keeping the business active and varied throughout the year.
Within those key markets, Modern Age sets itself apart through a notoriously strong focus on customer service and energy efficiency, two priorities that Peter considers non-negotiable. “Organization and communication are very important to me, and are prioritized across the whole business. Our customers and buyers are treated fairly throughout the entire process, and we are not the kind of company that goes quiet once the warranty period is ticking down. We are always there to service our buyers, to stand behind our product and to provide whatever support is needed. That is important to us, and it is how our name carries the right reputation.
“Energy efficiency is equally central to what makes us different from the competition, as it saves our clients money in the long term. Building codes are changing on Long Island and in New York as a whole, and we are only two code cycles away from mandatory net-zero homes. This means any homes we build will have to produce more energy than they consume. The way we have been building for years already puts us close to that point, so the transition will not be as dramatic for us as it will be for others who are only just beginning to think about it. Our homes are fitted with advanced equipment like energy recovery ventilators, which are particularly beneficial for residents with asthma or allergies, and our insulation standards are extremely high, significantly reducing energy loss. The results speak for themselves; utility bills end up lower for our clients and they consistently realize that they made a good decision by buying a home from us,” Peter adds.
Exciting projects
Modern Age’s approach to energy efficiency runs through every stage of the build process. Beneath the exterior siding, the team installs rigid board insulation on the outside wall. While it is not a requirement, it is a standard the company has chosen to adopt, which creates an exceptionally tight building envelope. On the inside, additional insulation is installed within the walls to engineer-specified standards. All Modern Age homes are built as hot roof insulation homes, meaning that the attic spaces never get too cold nor overheated regardless of the season, as the roof rafters themselves are insulated, turning the attic into fully conditioned space. The same principle applies to basements, where exterior walls are insulated to create a space that is usable all year round. This gives homeowners the flexibility to finish those lower levels and add square footage to their home.

One of the most exciting projects currently underway for the company is a 13-home subdivision in a large community named Seacrest Estates in Jamesport, situated on a new dead-end street with views towards Long Island Sound. “Two of those homes are nearly complete and the project has just gone live, so we are very excited,” Peter enthuses. “There is a lot of activity going on as the season opens up, and Jamesport is right at the center of that.”
Another exciting project is taking shape in the heart of Port Jefferson Village. “Pine Hill Woods is an exclusive six-home luxury subdivision that is reintroducing new construction residences to the Village – an opportunity that has been largely absent for many years,” Peter adds. “Designed with exceptional craftsmanship and modern living in mind, these homes represent a rare offering in one of Long Island’s most desirable communities. In addition, we are developing three new homes on Dayton Avenue in Manorville. One home has already been sold, reflecting strong buyer demand, while the remaining two residences are currently under construction and progressing toward completion.”
For the remainder of 2026, the focus is on completing the above-mentioned projects alongside a number of single-home projects currently under construction. In addition to that, Modern Age has around 15 permit applications pending in the town of Brookhaven, keeping a steady pipeline of future work in motion. There is also a recently sold property in East Marion on the North Fork, nearing delivery. For Peter, staying ahead of the market is a vital part of the job and a priority for the foreseeable future. “Every day involves staying in contact, watching what is coming to market and trying to get involved before something gets listed publicly. This is almost a full-time job in itself for a company like ours, but it is what keeps us engaged and grows our business,” he concludes.
For decades, Modern Age has built its reputation on Long Island by delivering homes that exceed industry building standards for quality, efficiency, and performance. Equally important is its commitment to homeowners, maintaining strong relationships and providing support long after handover to ensure lasting satisfaction and peace of mind.
“As we begin our next chapter, our sister company, Modern Age Realty Group, is coming to fruition. I am fortunate to play a role in building this family-owned enterprise alongside my daughter, Catherine Bukowski, a licensed real estate broker. Together, we founded our real estate brokerage two years ago with a shared vision of providing exceptional service and expertise to our clients. The addition of an in-house brokerage has further strengthened our organization and enhanced the value we deliver. Because our team possesses a comprehensive understanding of each property we represent, we are uniquely positioned to communicate its features, benefits, and potential to prospective buyers and homeowners alike. This seamless collaboration allows us to provide a more informed, efficient, and personalized real estate experience.”
