Flagg Coastal Homes seamlessly blends Northeastern inspired design with modern coastal living

Now well established as an outstanding creator of beautiful, functional and exceptional homes, Flagg Coastal Homes was founded 18 years ago, in 2007. Brian Gilhooly, CEO, joins Modern Home Builders to discuss the evolution of the business. “Flagg Coastal Homes is the premier design-build firm based in the heart of Coronado, California, proudly serving the San Diego County coastline,” he begins. “Specializing in crafting distinctive waterfront luxury homes, we bring unparalleled expertise in seaside living and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

“As a licensed California contractor, Flagg Coastal Homes has shaped the new California coastal style by completing over 77 exceptional residences in prestigious locations such as Coronado, Encinitas, Del Mar, and La Playa in Point Loma. Our exclusive focus on coastal properties ensures that every home we build is thoughtfully designed with durable materials tailored to withstand the unique challenges of the coastal environment. By honing in on prime locations, high-quality craftsmanship, and personalized service, Flagg Coastal Homes remains the trusted choice for discerning clients seeking timeless luxury in the coastal zone.”

Brian goes on to share his own journey and how he came to lead Flagg Coastal Homes: “I became the CEO of the company in 2023, bringing a unique blend of leadership, operational expertise, and a deep connection to the Coronado community. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, I moved to Coronado in 1995 to attend BUD/S training. I served as a Navy SEAL for six years, primarily with SEAL Team 3 and Naval Special Warfare Unit One in Guam, where I honed my skills in teamwork, leadership, and mission execution. During this time, I met and later married my wife Kelly, a Coronado native and graduate of Coronado High School.”

Coronado charm

“In 2002, I transitioned to the FBI, embarking on a 21-year career that included assignments in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., San Diego, and Los Angeles. As the head of the Criminal Investigation Division in Los Angeles, I managed high-profile cases across a wide range of criminal violations. In 2022, a chance meeting with John O’Brien, the founder of Flagg Coastal Homes, at a local Coronado event sparked a conversation that would shape the next chapter of my career. John was looking to transition the day-to-day operations of the company to the next generation while focusing more on business development in his role as brand manager. At the same time, I was preparing for my mandatory retirement from the FBI and seeking my next professional challenge. The timing was perfect, and we began a mentorship process to ensure a smooth transition and maintain the high standards of Flagg Coastal Homes.”

Brian then gives an overview of the different services the company provides: “We offer a comprehensive range of services, specializing in both custom builds and renovations. We blend California coastal style with East Coast-inspired architecture, creating our signature aesthetic that balances timeless design with durability. By incorporating engineered materials, we ensure our homes are built to withstand the harsh coastal environment, standing the test of time in both form and function. This attention to detail not only enhances their value but also contributes to the unique charm of Coronado’s neighborhoods.”

Brian then explains how Flagg Coastal Homes’ style has evolved: “Our project style is deeply rooted in the vision of our founder, John O’Brien, and our residential designer, Dorian Lytle. John began his career as a developer before transitioning to custom residential homes, drawing inspiration from his upbringing in the Northeast. His primary influences include the timeless architecture of Cape Cod and Nantucket, which he seamlessly blends with the historic charm of Coronado.

“Dorian joined Flagg Coastal Homes about 15 years ago and has designed over 50 projects for the company, including the acclaimed 2014 Coastal Living Showhouse. Dorian’s designs emphasize features that highlight Coronado’s coastal lifestyle, such as second-floor wraparound decks, reverse floor plans, and expansive windows that blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. These elements maximize the natural beauty and functionality of each home, creating spaces that reflect both Flagg Coastal Homes’ design legacy and the uniqueness of life in Coronado.”

Thoughtful design

Brian concludes by reflecting on the devastating effect of recent wildfires and what homebuilders can do to help mitigate events like this in the future: “The wildfire situation continues to have a devastating impact on our Southern California community, touching all of us in personal ways. Many of us know someone who has experienced loss due to fires and high winds. Beyond the immediate destruction, wildfires blanket our neighborhoods in ash, disrupt our children’s education, and limit our ability to go outdoors. Our hearts go out to all who have been affected by these tragic events.

“As builders, there are proactive steps we can take to enhance safety and resilience in our projects. We prioritize the use of fire-rated roofing materials, non-combustible siding, and fire-resistant decking made from composite materials or treated wood. For added protection, we incorporate advanced systems and technology, including residential fire sprinkler systems, non-combustible insulation, and smart monitoring systems with smoke and heat sensors.

“However, no measure is more important than emergency preparedness. Having evacuation plans and fire safety kits readily available can make all the difference in protecting lives during a wildfire. Together, through thoughtful design and planning, we can contribute to a safer, more resilient community.”
