Dive into the evolution of AV Builders: how Andrew Vanni turned a family passion into shared success
Since its beginning, AV Builders’ philosophy has remained the same: to build exceptional homes, maintain strong relationships, and guide every project with a hands-on, collaborative approach. Andrew Vanni, President of AV Builders, founded the company in 2008 at just 20 years old, building on generations of family experience in the trades. Based in San Carlos, California, the business has evolved significantly, not just in terms of the experiences and relationships it’s built, but also in the complexity and scale of its projects. Today, AV Builders is a leading luxury custom homebuilder primarily serving clients throughout the Bay Area Peninsula, championing a deeply personalized approach across every project, from bespoke luxury homes to major renovations.

Modern Home Builders sits down for an exclusive interview with Andrew to dive deeper into the story behind AV Builders’ evolution and learn more about the key driving factors behind its success.
“Construction has always been a part of my life,” Andrew reminisces. “My father and uncle were general contractors, and my grandfather was a painter and woodworker. Some of my earliest memories are on job sites, learning firsthand what it takes to build something well.
“Growing up in a trades family gave me a hands-on education that can’t be replicated in a classroom,” he reveals. “I was exposed to the realities of the business from an early age. While attending college, I worked for a high-end finish company and was shown another side of the industry. That experience broadened my perspective and inspired me to build a team that approaches builds differently, moving beyond the traditional transactional client-contractor relationship.”
Championing communication
These early experiences shaped Andrew’s understanding of the construction industry, whilst also laying the foundation for the values that would define his own business. As he began to envision a different approach, Andrew became increasingly convinced that technical expertise alone wasn’t enough – that success would ultimately be built on trust, communication, and a commitment to quality.
“Even from a young age, I felt there was another way to approach this business. Many of the things that mattered most – clear communication, accountability, and strong relationships – seemed surprisingly overlooked,” Andrew reveals. “From the outset, my focus was entirely on delivering exceptional quality, rather than prioritizing financial gain. I believed that if we did great work and earned peoples’ trust, the business would grow organically. That philosophy continues to guide us today.
“We place a strong emphasis on planning, transparency, and collaboration because successful projects depend on more than construction alone. They depend on relationships and the ability to adapt as a project evolves. Craftsmanship still matters – a project can have beautiful finishes; but if the process is disorganized or the client feels unheard, something has been lost along the way. Our success over the years has been built largely on the relationships we’ve cultivated and maintained. For much of that time, we relied very little on online marketing or advertising. Instead, our reputation grew through word-of-mouth recommendations, client referrals, and strong partnerships with respected architects and designers.”
Prioritizing people
While these long-standing relationships with clients and industry partners have been central to AV Builders’ success, they are rooted in something even more fundamental: its people. Behind every project is a dedicated, passionate team that shares the same commitment to craftsmanship, communication, and integrity. By investing as much in its employees as it does in its clients, the company has built a culture that has supported steady growth and consistently exceptional results.
“I’m incredibly proud of the team we have and everything we’ve accomplished to date,” Andrew affirms. “Some of the team have been around since our inception, and that continuity has played a significant role in our growth. Over the years we’ve been intentional with our growth, taking a highly personalized approach to each new hire. We believe work should enrich life, not define it. We encourage and support our team in pursuing their passions and dreams outside of the workplace.”

Exceptional client experience
As AV Builders continues to evolve, its guiding principles remain unchanged. By combining generations of craftsmanship with a modern, relationship-driven approach, the company has established itself as one of the Bay Area Peninsula’s most trusted custom homebuilders. Whether delivering a bespoke luxury residence or transforming an existing home, Andrew and his team remain focused on creating spaces that stand the test of time. With a strong culture, enduring client partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to quality, AV Builders is well-positioned to continue shaping exceptional homes, and lasting relationships for many more generations to come. Above all else, its goal remains the same: bring unparalleled comfort to every home it works on – now and forever.
“I genuinely believe that our most important chapter is still ahead of us,” Andrew says. “For us, growth has been a steady process of refining our craft, strengthening our team, and raising our standards, all in an effort to improve the client experience. Those principles will continue to guide whatever comes next. For me, what we create goes far beyond construction. These homes become the backdrop for family dinners, celebrations, milestones, and countless everyday moments that matter most.
“As a husband and father, I understand that a home is more than just a house. It’s a place of comfort, belonging, and refuge – a place where people can truly be themselves and live their lives unabashedly,” he emphasizes, concluding our interview optimistic for the future ahead. “Helping create those spaces is a privilege, and it’s what makes this work so rewarding, so I hope we’ll be right here, with more exciting projects to share when we speak next.”
