“Founded in 1989, we are a design-build firm primarily focused on high-end residential work. We have almost 200 employees across all facets of the industry, including a full-service construction operation, which I oversee. Within that construction operation, we act as a  general contractor with project managers and site superintendents, but we also self-perform a number of trades, namely finish carpentry, concrete, and landscape installations. We also have our own cabinet shop and metal shop, allowing us to build many components in-house. Through this seamlessly integrated design-build approach, we endeavour to create the most wonderfully crafted modern and timeless homes possible,” he begins.

Integrated approach

Blending architecture, construction and self-performance is one of the key attributes that truly sets Marmol Radziner apart from other home building companies. “The number of trades we perform in-house and the control that gives us over quality, cost, and schedule distinguishes us in the realm of construction. While it is not necessarily easier from a management perspective to handle all these businesses in house, we feel like it ultimately delivers the best homes and the most enjoyable process for our clients. This is primarily because our clients have a single point of contact from the start of design of their home to the day they move in, and this single source of responsibility, we believe, creates the most enjoyable process for them. In addition to our self-performed trades, we are also proud of the long standing relationship we have with our key subcontractors and consider them to be critical partners in our success. Building beautiful homes is truly a team effort at every level.

“Another reason we embrace this design-build approach is our belief that creating beautiful homes is not merely about design or construction; it is a holistic process that benefits from the close integration of both. Integrating design and construction into a seamless process helps avoid many common issues. Even with the most perfect execution, problems can arise during construction, and how we address these challenges is crucial to the success of a project. By serving as both the architect and the builder, we are able to develop solutions more efficiently as a unified team. As the design-builder, it is our problem to deal with entirely, which takes a lot of potential stress off of our clients’ shoulders,” Mike expands.

Impressive project portfolio

Homeowners in California recognize the value of this offering, which empowers Marmol Radziner to work on rewarding projects, where it can showcase its wide-ranging expertise and capabilities. “I would also like to preface this by noting that we do not always handle every aspect of a project. We occasionally have clients who approach us solely for architecture or construction services, and at times, we even build homes for other architects or fabricate cabinetry for other general contractors. This flexibility demonstrates our commitment to working in whatever capacity best serves each project. However, when given the choice, we of course prefer to implement our full breadth of services, as we believe it creates the most effective process for our clients. Currently, we have several ongoing projects where we use this approach.

“One of them is the Birdview Residence in Malibu, which involves the renovation of a beautiful mid-century modern home perched on a bluff overlooking the ocean. It is the type of home that is so stunning the client would never consider tearing it down. It is a true gem, and we are fortunate to provide all our services to reimagine the home for our client. On the other end of the spectrum, we recently completed construction on a new large and complex hillside home in Bel Air. For this project, we managed all services except for interior design. This residence is incredibly detailed, with a lot of ornate carpentry and cabinetry elements, making it particularly well-suited to our integrated building approach,” says Mike.

Sustainable solutions

In the home building sector, as in many industries, sustainability is increasingly important to customers. Mike explains how Marmol Radziner adapts to the demand for greener homes. “While many of the homes we build are in Los Angeles, we also have construction divisions that serve the San Francisco area, New York and the Rocky Mountains in Aspen. While we operate in these diverse markets, our roots are planted in the Los Angeles market. Fortunately, California is forward-thinking when it comes to sustainability, both in terms of materials and energy. As a result, we generally incorporate green materials as standard practice, even when clients do not specifically request a sustainable building. For instance, we typically utilize the latest in LED lighting, maintain high quality control standards with insulation, and only use low-VOC adhesives, water-based paints and low-formaldehyde cabinetry. Nonetheless, we do have some clients with specific sustainability goals. So, within many of our homes, we now implement other technologies such as advanced battery backup systems and solar installations. These clean energy systems not only provide clients with a return on their utility costs but also meet the increasing demand for emergency backup power, especially in light of recent wildfires in California and the increasing potential for power outages during windy conditions to reduce the risk of fires. In the past, these needs were often addressed with generators, but that technology has started to become outdated. Therefore, we are now witnessing more and more clients requesting advanced backup systems,” Mike ends.

Marmol Radziner’s distinctive in-house approach to home building has earned it a strong reputation in California and beyond.
