Founded in 1976 by Bob Thorsen, alongside his father, Jim Thorsen, the family-owned business takes every client’s dream and turns it into its own passion. Working in close partnership with architects and designers, Thorsen transforms stunning designs into luxury homes built with patience, precision, and a deep respect for the craft. Now, armed with five decades of experience and expertise, Thorsen is expanding into South Florida. Modern Home Builders sits down with John Thorsen, Executive Vice President, and James Thorsen, Vice President of Construction, to dive deeper into the company’s evolution and uncover the cultural qualities that continue to set it apart from the competition. John, who represents Thorsen’s third generation, begins with some history.
“We’ve grown from a local Alexandria builder to a mid-Atlantic, regional custom builder working across DC, Maryland and Virginia,” he details. “When I first joined the business full-time around 20 years ago, we were still small, and the Great Recession of 2008 forced us to spread our wings. We started penetrating higher-end markets and focused on developing the service end of our business. We knew that our product was going to be the best, so we drilled down on that hospitality-style experience. This helped us evolve from nuts-and-bolts construction to a luxury brand.”
“What’s interesting about working in this area is that we have people from all over the world here, so their design influences are reflected in what they build,” James adds. “We’re agnostic in what we like to build; we always say that we’re builders of meaningful architecture. We build whatever our client wants – everything from traditional to modern – and we do it very well.”
By virtue of this approach, Thorsen has delivered some of the most exquisite homes across the region. From classic American spaces to contemporary interiors, the company’s projects are unified by a consistent design language, precise execution and meticulous attention to detail. One of Thorsen’s most recent projects – two modern homes at Chain Bridge Road, Washington DC – exemplifies this. Combining tall ceilings with large, sweeping windows and a creative use of materials, these homes capture luxury at every turn, perfectly juxtaposing contemporary refinement with beautiful natural elements that truly set off the surrounding landscape.
Commitment to care and quality
John reveals what makes these homes interesting. “When we think about modern luxury, it all comes down to volume of space and simplicity; as Da Vinci once said, simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication. To the untrained eye, these homes might look simple, but there are many elements that go into achieving that result. It’s where we really excel – the clean lines, the sitelines, reveals, the large glazing, the systems behind the walls, and so forth. The ceilings are 13 feet tall and there are copious amounts of insulation with geothermal heating and cooling systems.”
With its expansion in South Florida on the horizon, Thorsen understands that establishing trust and building a local network are some of the most important first steps. Upholding its relationship-centric mindset, the company is moving into the market with a long-term view focused on preparation, partnerships, and assembling the right people to support its growth in the region.
“We haven’t built a house in Florida yet, which can be a hurdle when interviewing clients. However, we have several strong leads and feel pretty good about turning at least one of them into a real project,” John says. “We’ve done lots of interviews and visited different subs and suppliers, doing our due diligence to make sure we find a good team. We’ve been pointed in the right direction for a lot of those, so we’re confident in our team.”
As Thorsen embarks on this growth trajectory, it remains firmly guided by the core principles of integrity and passion that have defined it since day one. Reflecting on the business’ 50th anniversary milestone, both John and James credit Thorsen’s culture as the driving force behind its longevity and success.
“One thing that has always stayed the same is our culture, in terms of how we treat our clients and view our employees as family,” James emphasizes. “We want the people who come on board with us to be here for life. The fun thing is that we’ve developed the type of culture where we all hold each other accountable, no matter our position. We want everyone to feel valuable and able to have a say in the business. It allows us to deliver a seamless, great product in all aspects of the build.”
“Our company culture is rooted in our shared commitment to excellence, as that’s what it all boils down to,” John affirms. “Perfection is impossible to achieve in construction because there are so many variables, but I don’t know another company that strives for perfection as much as we do. That’s what sets us apart from others; we think of ourselves as stewards of the built environment. We treat every home that we build like it’s our own.”
Looking ahead, John and James have clear visions for Thorsen’s next chapter. “My top priority is delivering the finest product that could possibly be built with the highest level of hospitality for our clients. We want to take a good look at what our weaknesses were in 2025 and tackle those to ensure that we’re delivering finishes and details that are truly unmatched,” James reveals. “In five years, I’d like to see us continue to expand our reach across the Mid-Atlantic, with an established office in South Florida,” John concludes. For both, the next chapter looks much like the last – built on the same foundations of quality, care, and an unrelenting commitment to getting it right
